Preventive Dental Care for Growing Smiles

Kids' mouths change fast. Baby teeth come in, shift, and eventually make way for permanent ones, and a lot happens in between. That's exactly why regular dental visits matter so much during childhood and why so many Scarborough parents look for a dentist who treats kids as more than just small adults.

Baby teeth aren't just placeholders. They help your child chew, speak clearly, and hold space for the adult teeth coming in behind them. Taking care of them properly now can make a real difference later.

Regular checkups give your dentist a chance to catch small concerns early, before they turn into bigger ones. They also give you a clearer picture of how your child's teeth and bite are developing. Over time, consistent visits help your child see the dentist as a normal, familiar part of life rather than something to dread.

Dental Exams & Cleanings

A typical exam involves checking your child's teeth, gums, and bite, and looking for early signs of decay or other developing concerns. A professional cleaning removes plaque and buildup that brushing at home can miss, especially in the back teeth.

Most children benefit from a checkup every six months, though your dentist may suggest a different schedule depending on your child's oral health.

The Canadian Dental Association recommends a first dental visit within six months of the first tooth erupting, and no later than age one, so your dentist can catch concerns as early as possible.

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride treatment helps strengthen tooth enamel, making teeth more resistant to the acid that causes cavities. It's applied directly to the teeth and only takes a few minutes.

Not every child needs fluoride treatment at every visit. Your dentist can look at your child's cavity risk and let you know whether it's a good fit.

Dental Sealants

Fissure sealants are a thin protective coating applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth, where deep grooves make it easy for food and bacteria to get trapped. Once applied, they act as a barrier that can help lower the risk of decay in those hard-to-clean spots.

They're a simple, quick procedure and don't require any drilling or numbing.

When Your Child Needs More Than Preventive Care

Prevention is always the goal, but sometimes a baby tooth develops a cavity, gets infected, or is damaged before treatment can happen. If that happens, there are a few options your dentist might discuss with you, depending on your child's situation.

Pulpotomy

If decay reaches the inner part of a tooth but the deeper root tissue is still healthy, a pulpotomy may be considered. It involves removing the affected portion of the tooth's inner tissue and placing a protective filling, with the goal of keeping the tooth in place.

Pulpectomy

When infection has spread further into the tooth's root canals, a pulpectomy may be recommended instead. This removes the affected tissue from the full length of the root before the tooth is sealed and restored.

Baby tooth extraction

Occasionally, a baby tooth can't be reasonably saved, and extracting  it is the more appropriate option. Your dentist will only recommend this when it genuinely serves your child's oral health.

Space Maintainers for Kids in Scarborough

If a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected, the surrounding teeth can start to drift into that open space. A space maintainer is a small device that holds the space open, giving the permanent tooth room to come in where it's supposed to.

Your dentist can walk you through which option, if any, fits your child's specific situation.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

First visits are as much about building comfort as they are about checking teeth.

Generally, you can expect a gentle look at your child's teeth and gums, a conversation about growth and development, and time for your questions. If your child has had a difficult experience before, or feels nervous walking in, mention it. Knowing ahead of time helps the visit go more smoothly.

Starting these visits early gives your child a chance to get used to the sounds, the chair, and the routine, long before any treatment is ever needed.

Helping Your Child Feel Comfortable at the Dentist

A little nervousness before a dental visit is common, and there's a lot you can do to help.

  • Use simple, positive words instead of anything that sounds scary

  • Let the dental team explain tools and steps in their own way

  • Tell us if your child has specific fears or past bad experiences

  • Keep visits routine, so they become familiar rather than a big event

  • Stay calm yourself. Kids pick up on how you feel about the visit.

We can't promise every visit will be worry-free, but a little preparation goes a long way.

Building Healthy Dental Habits at Home

Good habits between visits matter just as much as the visits themselves.

  • Brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste suited to your child's age

  • Start flossing once two teeth touch each other

  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks, especially between meals

  • Keep up with regular checkups, even when nothing seems wrong

Small, consistent habits at home tend to make the biggest difference over time.
